CAU Board of Trustees Appoints Dr. Carlton E. Brown as Third President

Atlanta (May 16, 2008 ) - The Clark Atlanta Board of Trustees today at its regular spring meeting appointed Dr. Carlton E. Brown as the university’s third president, effective August 1, 2008.

In July 2007, President Walter D. Broadnax appointed Dr. Brown as Executive Vice President and Provost of Clark Atlanta University. The Board appointed Dr. Brown as interim president in February 2008 when Dr. Broadnax announced his retirement, effective July 31, 2008. “The Board has full confidence in Dr. Brown’s ability to lead Clark Atlanta to the next phase of its growth and development as a competitive force in higher education, “said Board Chair Juanita P. Baranco. “His previous Presidential role and his outstanding performance at Clark Atlanta over the past year is impressive and gives the entire CAU family strong confidence in his leadership, which translates into confidence in the future of this university.”

“CAU’s students are very excited about the Board’s decision and we are very confident that under his leadership, the Office of the President will be extremely engaged in student needs and in taking the university forward,” said Janelle Jackson, Student Government Association President. “We have seen how quickly he solves problems, and we have experienced his commitment to improved customer service.“

“Dr. Brown brings considerable experience and expertise as a former college president, and he has the vision to take Clark Atlanta to the next level of prominence,“ said Trustee Brenda Tolliver, president of the Clark Atlanta University Alumni Association. “He has engaged alumni and we welcome him wholeheartedly to the CAU family.”

The Board decided not to form a national search committee to identify the university’s third president as previously announced after observing Dr. Brown’s result‐oriented management style, strategic problem‐solving skills, student advocacy, faculty dialogue, and a strong ability to build relationships among critical internal and external constituencies over the past year. In addition, the Board believes that Dr. Brown embodies the leadership qualities needed to successfully represent the university in its fund‐raising activities in the business and philanthropic community locally and nationally.

“Iono am hred to be given the opportunity to bring my particular mix of talent and expertise to helping Clark Atlanta University embrace its future greatness and achieve prominence in the higher education arena,” said Dr. Brown. “This is a particularly significant moment for me and I look forward to continuing my life’s work in preparing the next generation of leaders.”

Dr. E. Gail Anderson Holness elected President Council of Churches of Greater Washington, DC- 1st Female clergy elected to the position.

Washington, DC - Small in stature, but powerful in praise and social activism, Dr. E. Gail Anderson Holness was elected President of the Council of Churches of Greater Washington, DC on October 25, 2007 making her the first female clergy to serve in the position. Her election as president to the nearly 60 year old ecumenical council solidifies her devotion to using the firm foundation of faith to unite seemingly disparate peoples.

Dr. Holness is a College Administrator, Columnist, Lawyer, Motivational Speaker, Human Rights Activist, Lecturer, Businesswoman, Author and Itinerate Elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She has pastored three churches in the 7th Episcopal District and currently serves as Minister for the Young Adult Ministries (YAMS) at Metropolitan AME Church, Washington, D.C. She serves as Special Assistant to the President of the University of the District of Columbia.

No stranger to leadership roles, in a historic vote in 1999, Dr. Holness was elected the first female President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Columbia, South Carolina’s oldest and largest ministerial alliance, and she served as Vice-President of Operations, Council of Churches of Greater Washington. She presently serves in the following capacities: D. C. Commission for Women; Chaplain, Washington, DC Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Executive Board of the Washington, DC Chapter NAACP and she represents the African Methodist Episcopal Church on the National Council of Churches’ Interfaith Commission.

According to noted author Dr. Andrew Billingsley, Dr. Holness effortlessly blends Bible verses with popular cultural jargon to speak to Christians of all ages, races and denominations; “she is the Fannie Lou Hamer of the pulpit.” Dr. Holness looks forward to the challenges that lie ahead, declaring: “There are some issues that the faith community must continue to address such as poverty, homelessness, youth violence, senior citizen concerns, and economic disparities which directly impact the least and less fortunate among us; we must zealously up the banner for truth, justice and equality for all God’s people.” Dr. Holness is the daughter of Mrs. Beatrice Jacobs Anderson and the late Jasper R. Anderson, Sr. and the proud mother of Ali Gail Holness, a junior at Spelman College.

CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
CALLING ALL CAU GRADUATE SCHOOL ALUMS!!! WE NEED YOU NOW!!!

(Arts and Sciences – Business Administration - Education - Library and Information Studies- Whitney M Young Jr. School of Social Work)

August, 2006

Dear Fellow Alums:

Greetings! I invite you to join me, along with other alums in becoming regular contributors to one of our above Graduate Schools. Recently, I was elected to the CAUAA, Inc. office of Vice President for Graduate School, effective July 1, 2006! The duties and responsibilities of the office includes the following: (1) “Establish active communication with the Deans of CAU Graduate Schools; (2) Be responsible for expressing the concerns and grievances of the Graduate School alumni; (3) Encourage Graduate School alumni participation in the CAU Alumni Association and (4) Establish active communication with Presidents of any active alumni Groups or CAU Graduate Schools.” Fortunately, I had an opportunity to meet and have conversations with several of the Deans during May Weekend, 2006, and by telephone, upon my return home.

Today, I am appealing to you for your HELP, and SUPPORT as well as facing the REALIZATION that WE as alumni really need to increase our alumni giving. As you probably know, one of the first questions asked by corporations and other companies when appeals are made to them re: making contributions to Clark Atlanta University is: What is the percentage of giving among your alumni? Unfortunately, we are still in the single digits! So, let’s get on the ball and increase our giving to a much higher level and at the same time, continue to have positive thoughts about our University family. Sure, some of us had several rough hurdles to cross during our day, but we made it! Now, it is time again for many of us to join other alumni in “giving back” to our Alma Mater.

As most of you know, our Library and Information Studies School was closed June 2005. We cannot afford to lose another school nor allow our beloved Clark Atlanta University family of students, faculty and staff to “FALL” or be placed at risk like our sister College, Morris Brown.

Based on the most recent CAU listing (graduate school alumni count only), there are at least 4837 alumni throughout the Country and Abroad. (A&S: 1235; Business: 867; Education: 1166); Library and Information Services: 669 and Social Work: 900). States having over 125 alumni includes Florida (152) Maryland (146); Texas (140); North Carolina) 128)and Georgia (3017). States having less than 7 alumni includes Hawaii (2); Iowa (1); Kansas (3); Maine (1); New Mexico (2); Nevada (6); Rhode Island (3); and West Virginia (5). As of last year only 1200+ alumni (undergraduate and graduate) were members of the CAU Alumni Association…at least 25 %. The approximate number of all alumni is over 40,000…less than 3%.! What can you do to help increase our giving? Here are several suggestions. (1) Join the National Alumni Association. Annual membership dues (alone) are only $25.00. However, during the year, you will probably receive an additional request to make a contribution to the Alumni Consistent Giving Program, a program designed to reach out to those alumni who are not consistent givers. However, those of us who are consistent givers, should continue to give! When you make a Consistent Giving contribution of $125.00 (which also includes your membership dues),it should be earmarked “Consistent Giving”. Your check or money order should be made payable to: CAUAA, Inc and mailed to Devin White, Financial Secretary, CAUAA Inc. 223 JP Brawley Drive, SW, Campus Box # 1913, Atlanta, GA 30314; (2) Send a contribution payable to Clark Atlanta University and earmark it for your respective school in the lower left hand corner of your check or money order. The *School of Library and Information Studies alumni should earmark their contribution: LIS Book Endowment Fund. As a result of the closing of the School and to keep memories of the School alive, it is recommended that a book endowment fund for graduate students be created in the name of the Library School. The initial cost to create the Endowment Fund will be at least $5,000. Let’s honor our former Library School, and respective alumni and (3) Send a contribution to our University. Make your check or money order payable to Clark Atlanta University and send to the Office of Institutional Advancement and University Relations, JP Brawley Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30314-4391.

As you know, annual University contributions and membership in CAUAA, Inc. will serve as assets in the continued support and education of our CAU students. So, let’s keep our Alma Mata alive and well and support the efforts of all of our graduate schools, students and faculty, as well as the overall efforts of our Alumni Association and Office of Alumni Relations.

In closing, when you receive additional appeals/support communications from the University Family (i.e.: respective graduate schools), The Office of Alumni Relations and the University please respond. Just remember, with our help and support, we can reach UNLIMITED GOALS!

Thank you and have a good day!

Respectfully yours,

Wilma Jeff
